The venue, a narrow double-volume L-shape with old brick walls exposed and juxtaposed with glass-and-steel fittings, is as interesting as the food, Chosen as CNN's only "Hot Spot" for Cape Town, the place is famous for its themed events, where winemakers or opera-house stars make an evening of it, and mini-festivals such as chef Peter Pankhurst's paean to offal for an entire week in winter.

| Politicians, media and the film industry are regularly to be seen enjoying themselves at the restaurant, where gracious dining without excessive formality; high standards of cooking and service are the norm. A small boutique wine list also reflects this establishments discerning good taste. Cross over Buitengracht and then take the next right at Bree. Once you reach the second intersection, turn right at the traffic light into Hout Street. |
This stylish restaurant celebrates the European trend towards "sophisticated peasant food," and if you enjoy the more interesting cuts of meat like sweetbreads, you'll find this one of the country's best choices. Starters are particularly exciting, like the absolutely delicious, though unassuming sounding, signature tomato tart with mozzarella encased in puff pastry; the pear, plum, pepper cheese, and walnut salad; the sugar-cured springbok with soba noodles and mango relish; and the chicken liver mousse served with port soaked figs.
Other delicious starters range from crème fraiche to keta caviar. For the Main you will be able to order anything from the Norwegian salmon with a horseradish crust, beetroot mash and a champagne butter sauce to a mushroom pancake stack with vegetable crisps and a thyme and tomato sauce. Chef Peter Pankhurst changes the menu daily to make the best of what's available, but if you haven't yet tried Karoo lamb, his pecan-encrusted rack is the way to go.
The menu includes vegetarian dishes inspired by international cuisine and the freshest produce available. The signature tomato tart delights even non-vegetarians, and everyone should leave room for the hot chocolate pancakes with coffee and kahlua sauce. Other mouth-wateringly delicious desserts include the cardomom crème brulee. The back entrance of the restaurant connects you to Heritage Square's central courtyard, where you can have an after-dinner drink upstairs at the Po-Na-Na Bar. |
The restaurant has hosted wedding receptions, book launches, literary lunches, the Chilli and Garlic Society and the Business Women's Association, birthdays, Jazz evenings and many private and corporate parties. A number of business meetings and presentations have also been booked at the restaurant.
The delegates were invited for a presentation followed by a meal. One pharmaceutical company typically has a 35% acceptance to invitations for presentations. When lunch at Savoy Cabbage formed part of the invitation they had a 95% attendance! Many of the regulars are aware that the restaurant does cater for functions and have been known to send a chef to cook for a private dinner party or waiting staff to serve! Cocktail parties, launches, beach picnics or just dinner for two can be arranged! |
